Silicon North Stars

2014 Trip

16 students from Minneapolis and St.Paul spent one week in Silicon Valley together, along with four chaperones from Minnesota and several other mentors in California. They met with Internet and technology leaders from top companies, startups, and venture capital funds. The week began with an intensive series of lectures, tours, discussions and group activities at companies throughout the area and ended with a culminating group project in which the students paired up to pitch their own tech startups. Fun evening activities gave students a chance to learn more about the Bay Area and bond with one another. Activities included but were not limited to:

  • Campus visits and talks at Google, Facebook, Apple, Stanford University, TaskRabbit, Indiegogo, the Target Innovation Center, and more.
  • A day spent with early-stage startup companies at Galvanize SF, a local tech incubator and co-working space for entrepreneurs.
  • Career coaching and mentorship from a series of technology professionals at participating companies.
  • A series of "fireside chats" with accomplished technology executives.
  • Team-building activities and group projects.
  • A design-thinking workshop — teaching brainstorming and creative thinking at Google
  • A culminating project, where students will use everything they've learned to create their own startup companies, and then pitch those companies to a panel of judges at the end of the week.
  • Fun activities to explore the Bay Area!
