This event is intended to engage our community’s chief decision makers in dialogue centered on an actionable solution to meeting the academic preparation and stem workforce needs of area businesses.
Overview: On Tuesday, May 20th Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) will host a STEM Career Readiness Summit to promote collaboration and engage the MPS community in critical dialog related to the development of quality STEM educational opportunities leading to career readiness for our students. Community partners, local industry, MPS students and staff, post-secondary institutions and government agencies will participate in conversations and consultation related to the development and launch of a new STEM Career Readiness certificate program. This new certificate program, aligned with Governor Dayton’s goal of developing the “world’s best workforce,” will link academic success, experiential learning and career readiness while certifying student preparedness related to key foundational academic and technical employment skills that will better prepare them to pursue careers in major STEM sectors and beyond.
Our keynote speaker, Dot Harris, Director, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, currently serves as a part of the White House Council on Women and Girls STEM Speakers Bureaus and is lead spokesperson for the DOE Minorities in Energy Initiative. This initiative links together representatives from diverse community organizations, academia, business, and industry to address shared challenges in the areas of STEM education, energy economic development, and climate change. Ms. Harris will address the urgent need to prepare MPS students to pursue careers in the STEM sectors.
Other speakers include:
Michael Goar. Chief Executive Officer - Minneapolis Public Schools
Paula Palmer. Director of College & Career Success - Minnesota Department of Education
Trent Tucker. STEM ambassador for U.S. Department of Energy Minorities in Energy Initiative
